"Everyone can lead because everyone can serve," says James Strock. “When service is the basis of leadership, everyone can be a leader.” What’s more, “We’re in a new era, with new rules, new ways to serve—and much greater accountability.”

... Too often, people think of leadership as being about the leader. A leader who serves has greater influence. Service —not control— leads to trust and increased influence.

... “Management is encompassed within leadership.” As leaders we must develop management skills.
“Ultimately, management is a key to extraordinary service. Individual performance has the limitations of an individual. You may be a virtuoso. Yet, if you are determined to express your individuality in a more expansive way, you must develop management skills and engage others in a larger enterprise.

To achieve ever deeper relationships with greater numbers of customers and other stakeholders, you must master management. Day in and day out, that means you must serve those with whom you work, enabling them to serve ever more effectively.

Strock urges us to make our life a masterpiece of service. It begins by asking the question—who am I serving—throughout our life, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day. Importantly, it is not a question that we should apply to only one area of our life. It should be an approach we take in all areas of our life—our time, our money, our relationships and thoughts.

Am I making my unique contribution?
Am I getting better every day?

Service isn’t easy. It doesn’t always get noticed, but it is what leading is all about. If that is hard to swallow, you need to ask yourself, why do I want to lead?

PETALING JAYA — It was a windy morning in Section 17. 14 men attended the first session for the Winning at Work and Home curriculum.
After the video presentation, Richard reminded us to watch how we think, instead of what we think.
There was no small group discussion.

The second Men's Fraternity curriculum began on 3^rd September 2010, same time....6a.m. Well, honestly, I was looking forward to continue in this class as I began to see myself changing after I graduated from the first curriculum. With all the brothers being part of my life too, I am truly thankful & grateful to our Holy God....OUR HEAVENLY FATHER, for His LOVE & PLEASURE; I get to learn all this on how to be a REAL MAN. I'll never forget the first time I discovered what a feeling was. It was in my early forties. "Surely not!" you may be thinking. Yes, it is true. Since then, I have discovered many men still live in this condition. It took an older mentor to help me understand the difference between information and a feeling. Wives are frustrated because their husbands share information, but not their feelings. They want to know what is going on inside their man. The fact is, most men have not been taught to identify feelings, much less how to share them. It is something that men must learn to do because it is not a natural trait. If they do share their feelings, society often portrays them as weak. No man willingly wants to be portrayed as weak.

In order to become an effective friend and leader, one must learn to be vulnerable with others and develop an ability to share feelings. It is a vital step to becoming a real person with whom others can connect emotionally. This is not easy to do if your parents did not teach you to share your emotional life with others. Emotional vulnerability is especially hard for men. Author Dr. Larry Crabb states,

Men who as boys felt neglected by their dads often remain distant from their own children. The sins of fathers are passed on to children, often through the dynamic of self-protection. It hurts to be neglected, and it creates questions about our value to others. So to avoid feeling the sting of further rejection, we refuse to give that part of ourselves we fear might once again be received with indifference. When our approach to life revolves around discipline, commitment, and knowledge [which the Greek influence teaches us] but runs from feeling the hurt of unmet longings that come from a lack of deeper relationships, then our efforts to love will be marked more by required action than by liberating passion. We will be known as reliable, but not involved. Honest friends will report that they enjoy being with us, but have trouble feeling close. Even our best friends (including spouses) will feel guarded around us, a little tense and vaguely distant. It's not uncommon for Christian leaders to have no real friends.

If this describes you, why not begin on a new journey of opening up your life to others in a way that others can see who you really are? It might be scary at first, but as you grow in this area, you will find new freedom in your life. Then, others will more readily connect with you. The Kind of Leader Others Want to Follow

Excerpt from The Right to Lead, by John Maxwell

What gives a man or woman the right to lead? It certainly isn't gained by election or appointment. Having position, title, rank or degrees doesn't qualify anyone to lead other people. And the ability doesn't come automatically from age or experience, either.

No, it would be accurate to say that no one can be given the right to lead. The right to lead can only be earned. And that takes time.

The key to becoming an effective leader is not to focus on making other people follow, but on making yourself the kind of person they want to follow. You must become someone others can trust to take them where they want to go.

As you prepare yourself to become a better leader, use the following guidelines to help you grow:

1. Let go of your ego. The truly great leaders are not in leadership for personal gain. They lead in order to serve other people.
Perhaps that is why Lawrence D. Bell remarked, "Show me a man who cannot bother to do little things, and I'll show you a man who cannot be trusted to do big things."

2. Become a good follower first. Rare is the effective leader who didn't learn to become a good follower first. That is why a leadership institution such as the United States Military Academy teaches its officers to become effective followers first - and why West Point has produced more leaders than the Harvard Business School.

3. Build positive relationships. Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less. That means it is by nature relational. Today's generation of leaders seem particularly aware of this because title and position mean so little to them. They know intuitively that people go along with people they get along with.

4. Work with excellence. No one respects and follows mediocrity. Leaders who earn the right to lead give their all to what they do. They bring into play not only their skills and talents, but also great passion and hard work. They perform on the highest level of which they are capable.

5. Rely on discipline, not emotion. Leadership is often easy during the good times. It's when everything seems to be against you - when you're out of energy, and you don't want to lead - that you earn your place as a leader. During every season of life, leaders face crucial moments when they must choose between gearing up or giving up. To make it through those times, rely on the rock of discipline, not the shifting sand of emotion.

6. Make adding value your goal. When you look at the leaders whose names are revered long after they've finished leading, you find that they were men & women who helped people to live better lives and reach their potential. That is the highest calling of leadership - and its highest value.

7. Give your power away. One of the ironies of leadership is that you become a better leader by sharing whatever power you have, not by saving it all for yourself. You're meant to be a river, not a reservoir. If you use your power to empower others, your leadership will extend far beyond your grasp.

In The Right to Lead, you will hear from & read about people who have done these same things and earned the right to lead others. Because of the courage they found and the character they displayed, other people recognized their admirable qualities and felt compelled to follow them. The followers who looked to these leaders learned from them, and so can we. Remember that it takes time to become worthy of followers. Leadership isn't learned or earned in a moment.

HAWAII, MAR 9 - What does ‘stifled’ mean? His natural emotions and behaviors are held in check with difficulty, his animal desires are smothered and suppressed, his confidence and masculinity is suffocated... His entire being is stifled; his breathing, speaking, walking, relationships and life habits have been nearly suffocated by the fear of judgment and the false lessons and ideas that have unknowingly been with him all his life. Muscles are tensed up throughout his day and he is ever-contemplative of his behavior and how others will react to it. He is analytical about his interactions with other men; this is where the boyish disease of homophobia takes hold of most insecure men, wondering (worrying) if the other guy is more 'alpha' than he is and trying to forcibly establish his role amongst other men. This modern uprise of homophobia in young men has caused men to stop looking to fellow men for help and deep-level, authentic friendship.
Women have been left to assume the roles as men's confidants and therapists; making women the SINGLE source of intimacy, spiritual growth, and most importantly, validation. Like children, being called a faggot or a sissy has more offending power than ever before and is a tremendous blow to the psyche of a stifled man. These un-masculine fears we have of social ridicule or character insult by other men causes men to keep only women in their intimate confidence. It drives men away from other men. Men keep all of their conversational topics on the top surface level of life; my boat, my car, my adventure, my girlfriend and my house…never anything deeply meaningful, soulful or emotional; a true life of quiet and hidden desperation and loneliness.
And when men feel this way and look around at their friends, everyone else seems to be doing alright, so they don't talk about it, leave it alone, stuff it down and keep the 'act like a man' face on. ...

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

"I didn't know you were in full-time Christian work,"
said my close friend as we were driving.
"I didn't realize that," she went on.
I responded, "Every person who has followed the will of God in their life is in full-time Christian work." God calls some to the mission field, others to be accountants, and others to be advertising executives, and still others to be construction workers. God never made a distinction between sacred and secular. In fact, the Hebrew word "avodah" is the root word having the same meaning of "work" and "worship." God sees our work as worship.

We have incorrectly elevated the role of the Christian worker to be more holy and committed than the person who is serving in a more secular environment. Yet the call to the secular workplace is as important as any other calling. God has to have His people in every sphere of life. Otherwise, many would never come to know Him because they would be separated from society.

I learned this lesson personally when I sought to go into "full-time" service as a pastor in my late twenties, only to have God thrust me back into the business world unwillingly. This turned out to
be the best thing He could have done for me, because it was never His will for me to be a pastor.
He knew I was more suited for the workplace.

We are all in missions. Some are called to foreign lands. Some are called to the jungles of the workplace. Wherever you are called, serve the Lord in that place. Let Him demonstrate His power through your life so that others might experience Him through you today and see your vocation as worship to His glory.

You can do everything right at work and manage yourself well there, but if your personal life is a mess, it will eventually turn everything else sour. What would it profit a leader to climb to the top of the organizational chart but to lose a marriage or alienate the children? As someone who spent many years counselling people, I can tell you, no career success is worth it.

For years one of my definitions of success has been this:
having those closest to me love and respect me the most. That is what is most important. I want the love and respect of my wife, my children, and my grandchildren before I want the respect of anyone I work with.
Don’t get me wrong. I want the people who work with me to respect me too, but not at the expense of my family. If I blow managing myself at home, then the negative impact will spill over into every area of my life, including work.

If you want to lead up, you must always lead yourself first. If you can’t,
you have no credibility. I’ve found the following to be true:

If I can’t lead myself, others won’t follow me.

If I can’t lead myself, others won’t respect me.

If I can’t lead myself, others won’t partner with me.

That applies whether the influence you desire to exert is on the people above you, beside you, or below you. The better you are at making sure you’re doing what you should be doing, the better chance you have for making an impact on others.

Listening Like Samuel

Someone once asked Joan of Arc why God spoke only to her. She responded, “Sir, you are wrong. God speaks to everyone. I just listen.”

When God spoke to Samuel, it was as the boy lay down quietly in the middle of the night. Even then, Samuel did not at first recognize that the voice belonged to God. He needed the wisdom of his experienced mentor, Eli, to understand who was communicating with him. But based on how often Samuel heard God's voice as an adult, it's clear that he did learn to identify, listen to, and obey God's voice.

Leaders are often very busy people. And they can easily get caught up in the activity of their obligations. If you're a leader, that's why it's important to set aside times to quiet yourself and listen for God's direction. As Bill Hybels says, “Leaders need to ask God to give them Samuel's ear.”

Teamwork and personal rigidity just don’t mix.
If you want to work well with others and be a good team player, you have to be willing to adapt yourself to your team. Team players who exhibit adaptability have certain characteristics.

Adaptable people are:

Teachable: Diana Nyad said, “I am willing to put myself through anything; temporary pain or discomfort means nothing to me as long as I can see that the experience will take me to a new level. I am interested in the unknown, and the only path to the unknown is through breaking barriers.” Adaptable people always place a high priority on breaking new ground.
They are highly teachable.

Emotionally Secure: People who are not emotionally secure see almost everything as a challenge or a threat. They meet, with rigidity or suspicion, the addition of another talented person to the team, an alteration in their position or title, or a change in the way things are done.
But secure people aren’t made nervous by change itself. They evaluate a new situation or a change in their responsibilities based on its merit.

Creative: When difficult times come, creative people find a way. Creativity fosters adaptability.

Service Minded: People who are focused on themselves are less likely to make changes for
the team than people focused on servicing others. If your goal is to serve the team, adapting to accomplish that goal isn’t difficult.

The first key to being a team player is being willing to adapt yourself to the team;
not an expectation that the team will adapt to you.

All the good advice in the world won’t help if you don’t have a teachable spirit.
To know whether you are really open to new ideas and new ways of doing things,
answer the following questions:

1. Am I open to other people’s ideas?
2. Do I listen more than I talk?
3. Am I open to changing my opinion based on new information?
4. Do I readily admit when I am wrong?
5. Do I observe before acting on a situation?
6. Do I ask questions?
7. Am I willing to ask a question that will expose my ignorance?
8. Am I open to doing things in a way I haven’t done before?
9. Am I willing to ask for directions?
10. Do I act defensive when criticized, or do I listen openly for the truth?

If you answered no to one or more of these questions, then you have room to grow in the area of teachability. Remember the words of John Wooden: “Everything we know we learned from someone else!”

KL, MAR 28 - It was a Sunday morning when Brother K H Chan joined a gang of approximately forty climbers, for an adventure. They went trekking from Janda Baik, to Gunung Nuang.

Here's what Chan had to say about the trip:

“ Here are the photos for Nuang from Janda Baik. The scenery is very good and we had a secret waterfall to play at after the trek.

The youngest person (12 years old) managed to complete the walk too.

Fastest speed is about 2.5 hours to the peak and average time is about 3 to 4 hours. Coming back is even faster, average speed is about 2.5 hours.

Our men should not be afraid to join us as anyone can take their time to make it. You do not need to complete the trail and at any time you can turn back. The trail is very clear. Just stick to your buddy so you will not get lost. If not sure, just rest along the trail until some climbers come along.”

Dear Son,

Tomorrow you turn 7 years old and I have been racking my brain about how to tie this birthday into a bigger picture manhood plan for you. I have been re-reading a book by Robert Lewis called Raising a Modern-Day Knight. He subtitles it, “A Father’s Role In Guiding His Son To Authentic Manhood.” It is a great read and very thought-provoking. He suggests making a big deal of some key dates on your calendar.

1. Your 13th birthday – in your teenage years you will go through a lot of changes as you start the transition from being a boy to becoming a man

2. Your graduation from high school – when you graduate you will experience more freedom than you have ever had and you will start to move from the authority of our home to launching out on your own

3. Your graduation from college – when you graduate from college (or trade school or whatever training process to prepare you for your career) you will have a big transition as a man who must face the world and begin providing for himself

4. Your marriage day – someday you will assume responsibility for a wife and a family of you own (Lord willing). And you will be King of your castle.

I want to add your 7th Birthday to that mix of special days. You are moving from childhood to boyhood. The next few years are filled with so many activities that are golden opportunities and are great years to begin to form some great habits that will lead you to being ready for the next manhood stages. You are a first grader now and it is time to take more responsibilities. But I am trying to figure out what your expectations should be over the next few years.

I know you want to be the King sometimes, but for now you will have be content to be a prince in my castle. I hope your time at home will prepare you to be the man you were created to be. My goal is to give you everything I can to help you navigate these next few years. It is my prayer that these letters will be a reminder of principles to guide your way and maybe you can even pass these on to your children some day. Pretty good stuff, huh? We will start filling in the blanks over the next few years. I would like to start taking you to breakfast about once a week where we can talk through what it means to be a man. I am looking forward to our man breakfast.

Tips on hiking

You'll find useful tips I personally apply and use when I'm in the jungle . Some of the tips here are originally my own, which I have observed and noted, and some were learnt from other people. Hope you will pass on the information presented here so that more can enjoy the outdoors.

Clothing

- Try to avoid cotton at all costs. Cotton is fine for walking in the city, but in the jungle, where it rains and where humidity is 98 % almost all the time, you'll have problems putting dry clothes on. Try to bring and wear synthetics, such as nylon, polyester or wool clothing while trekking as well as while in camp. They will absorb less moisture and dry quickly. Don't believe me? Check out clothes worn by sportsmen ( those who sweat buckets) and see what they're made of. I usually wear imitation football jerseys with a single layer nylon trek bottom while trekking. Bathe in them after the long day, hang them up to dry, and they'll be dry and smelling nice by morning.

- Bring a sarong along. It is not only useful as a clothe piece, but can also be your changing room, fly swatter , blanket , towel, pillow, emergency stretcher, etc, etc, etc.

- If you think your boots are giving you blisters, try wearing two pairs of socks. One pair should be thin and slippery, maybe like those worn to the office. Wear it under a thicker pair of socks, which will provide the cushioning. The two socks will slip between them, and save your feet from blisters. I have tried them, and they sometimes work.

- Bring a warm hat. Most people don't realize that about 70 % of the heat lost by the body is from the head. If your toes are cold, wear a warm sock.

- In cold weather, bring many layers of warm clothes, not one thick jacket. This way, you can remove / add on layers depending on the temperature. My typical cold weather clothing consists of :(upper body) one polyester long sleeved shirt, one Polartec 200 bipolar fleece (as an insulator), and an al-cheapo tightly woven nylon shell (as a wind shell). For my legs, it is usually a pair of tights (insulation) and a nylon pant over it.

- Sleeping bags don't have to be thick, if you sleep with your warm clothes on. Many people I noticed, take off their jackets as they slip into their sleeping bags.

- Keep some kind of jacket near the top of your pack, incase you get chilly during that lunch break, or when waiting for your turn.

- Avoid bringing big thick towels, as you won't be bathing much. I just bring a small hand towel, which is just about enough to dry myself. Those who're really into saving weight can consider using the sarong as a towel. The same goes to toiletries. Put shampoo into 35 mm film containers, and cut soap bars into smaller chunks. Share toothpaste and mirrors.

- If you are using leather boots, make sure that you take good care of them. Make sure you apply some leather preserver/waterproofer/mink oil after every time you wash your boots. You should also wash your boots after every backpacking trips, as the soil found here in Malaysia can sometimes be slightly acidic and will spoil your boots if left on too long.

Equipment

- Always bring an umbrella, if you're expecting rain !! Don't bother with rain coats, because you'll get wet with sweat anyway if you wear it during hiking. An umbrella sure helps a lot when you're in camp. It is also more comfortable to sit under an umbrella, while waiting for the rain to stop. Try it.

- If you're bringing water containers for water for the peak, consider getting yourself a MSR Dromedary bag. It is a waterproof Cordura bag, and is sort of indestructible. They come in different capacities . When not in use, they just roll up and take almost no weight and space.

- The first thing you should do when you reach camp is to set up your tent/flysheet. Resist the temptation to take a dip or cook first. Ever noticed how it conveniently rains just as you've laid all your dry clothes and emptied your bag's contents or when you're halfway through your instant noodles..........

- Sleeping under a flysheet is better than sleeping under a tent. Tents are heavy, expensive, claustrophobic, sometimes hot , difficult to get in and out of, and you can't cook in them . Instead, buy some lightweight waterproof nylon or PE , sew the corners and attach 4 grommets on each side. Rig it up in the usual "A" way, and you should have a fairly comfortable place to spend the night. Don't pitch it too high up, because if it rains, the rain water will splash under the flysheet .

- Always bring a clothesline .The next thing to do after pitching up your flysheet is to tie the clothes line, and announce it to everyone . Make sure it is not too close to where you'll be hanging around, otherwise you'll be mingling with allsorts of weird and scary insects . Some people just LOVE to hang their clothes on the guy lines holding up the flysheet. When the weather is fine, well, fine..... But if it happens to rain in the middle of the night, the clothes will absorb water, get heavy, and together with some wind, rip the grommets off your flysheet . Imagine waking up at 3 am , in a storm ,with the flysheet flapping away like a loose sail..... seen that, done that.

- Rafia string is one of the most useful things to bring camping, and you should at least have a few meters spare for emergency uses. It's cheap, light, and damn useful, but make sure you carry the used rafia back out. I have seen too many places littered with used rafia, all waiting to catch your leg and make you trip. It also looks horrible too. I personally don't use rafia, because even though they're cheap, they still cost money, and the tendency to litter the campground with them is quite high. Instead, I buy nylon cord, about 3 mm dia. Cut them in various lengths, say 5 pcs of 3 m , 4 pcs of 6 m , etc. Dump them in a stuff sack together with some stronger rope, about 6-8 mm maybe, and that's probably all you need to rig up your fly sheet, tie up the clothes line, and for emergency uses. They're more expensive than rafia, but they last much longer, and you'll sometimes appreciate the added strength they offer . Plus, because they cost much more, you won't be leaving them after using them. Try to get bright colors, so that you don't trip or cut your neck when they're tied up.

- Use a hydration bladder to hydrate yourself instead of using a water bottle. Water bottles are hard to access, and have covers which can be lost easily. By using a hydration bag, you'll find it easier to hydrate yourself while trekking. Just fill it up and place it under the top cover of your bag. The only problem is that you'll have a tough time cleaning the mold from the inside of the bag if you put other liquids than plain water in the bag.

- Trekking poles are very useful. They help you keep your balance, help you cross rivers, give some extra push when climbing steep slopes, saves some of your knees on the way down and can be used to push foliage/unwanted things . They can also be used to rig up you fly sheet. However, not many people use trekking poles, and if you use them, people will sometimes give you that "This guy must be joking....There's no snow here" look. Just bear it........

Food

- Bring light food which is high in energy. Go for grains like rice, wheat and oats. Try not to bring instant food, as most of them are loaded with preservatives and after a few mouthfuls, might not taste too good. Eggs, bread, cheese, mayonnaise, keropok ikan, instant cucur udang or instant pancakes, sup pucuk, sambal ikan bilis (cooked at home) and serunding are just a few examples.

- No matter how much food you bring, always have at least 3 packets of Maggie mee.

- While trekking, it is not advisable to stop and cook lunch, instead cook what you intend to have for lunch in the morning, before you break camp. Another option is to bring biscuits or granola bars.

- Always bring your OWN food. Never let your friends carry your food, especially your snacks, which you intend to eat along the trail.

- Try to avoid drinking tea and coffee , because both are diuretics and make you loose more water from the body. Instead, go for Milo or Horlicks, which have more nutrition in them. While trekking, adding powdered glucose or other powdered flavored drinks to plain water is much better than drinking plain water. Better still, drink sports drinks like 100 Plus or Isomax.

- I believe the river water in Malaysia is safe to drink, well at least , around the mountains . I have never seen anyone filter or treat their drinking water. I myself have been drinking water straight from the rivers ever since I began climbing, and so far nothing bad has happened.......yet.

Training

    I used to trek without any training, and it is possible to accomplish the journey, but you might suffer more than you should. After a few mountains, I tried training prior to the trip and it really helped a lot. I didn't feel so tired at the end of the day, I didn't have that stiff leg - duck kind of walk the next few days. You don't have to spend hours a day training, just 45 minutes (minimum) of some aerobic activity (e.g. jogging, swimming or cycling) is enough. But you have to do it not less than 3 times a week. Slowly build up your stamina and fitness, don't jump right into it. Make sure you have proper shoes , as they might cause knee, ankle, tendon or ligament problems. A heart rate monitor is the best tool to help you train effectively, as sometimes you go jogging for 3 hours, but only spend 30 minutes in your effective heart rate zone. If you want to train effectively, you should know your effective heart rate zone, which is explained below.
    To calculate your effective heart rate zone, you have to multiply your max heart rate with the range you want to train in (refer table below). The two numbers are your upper and lower limit, i.e. the range which your heart should be beating per minute . To calculate you max heart rate, take 220 minus your age An easier way would be to use an online heart rate calculator, which is available at the bottom of this page - http://www.kanbike.org/pages/heart.php
        My weekly schedule would be jogging (about 8-12 km) on Mondays and Wednesdays, with some light activity ( rock climbing / fishing) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fridays would be an off day or maybe I'd go cycling. Saturday or Sunday would be a long training such as a 4-6 hour hike or bike ride. If you're planning to climb a mountain, trekking with a heavy backpack would be beneficial.
        Since moving to Langkawi , I haven't been able to adhere to my normal training schedule, something which I really regret.

Heart rate and exercise

There is a direct correlation between your effort and your heart rate. As you exercise harder, your heart rate will increase in an almost direct proportion to your exertion intensity. As you slow down, your heart rate will drop.
    Your resting heart rate is a excellent indicator of health and can be tracked on a daily basis. The onset of a common cold or overtraining will raise your resting heart rate. If your fitness level increase your resting heart rate will also indicate this by decreasing.
    Knowing which heart rate zone you're in will make your workouts more efficient. In addition, you may find that you're working too hard for the goal you want to achieve. Many people exercise to hard when all they want to do is lose weight. They should be in Zone 2 or Zone 3, but they're obviously much higher during their workouts. This puts them at a much greater risk of injury which can deter them from exercising again.
    People also take their pulse at their wrist to measure their heart rate, which is a highly inaccurate way to measure heart rate. Using a heart rate monitor is the most accurate way to tell which zone you're in at any time during a workout.

Heart rate and health

You can use your heart rate monitor for relaxation as well as for exercise. Deep breathing exercises and resting lower your heart rate significantly.
One of the best indicators of health is tracking your resting heart rate. This is taken just as you wake up and are still lying in bed. As your fitness level increases, your resting heart rate will go down. Many people measure their resting heart rate every day to see how they're doing. If you're overtraining , your resting heart rate will jump up a few beats per minute and you know to take it easy that day.
Another measure of health is your recovery heart rate. This is best measured after the same type of workout under the same conditions. As your fitness level increases, your recovery rate will also increase because your body is getting used to that workout. It is important to compare equivalent exercises and to keep the measurements as consistent to each other as possible.

Abraham had no idea where God was taking him; he just knew he couldn't stay where he was. Try explaining that to your friends! But instead of questioning God, we read, "By faith Abraham... went out, not knowing where he was going". Not once did he consider going back home when times got tough. He knew that for him, God wasn't back there. Jephthah is remembered in Scripture for his spectacular victory over the Ammonites, and for a vow he made to God before the battle, a vow he refused to break: "...I have given my word to the Lord, and I cannot go back on it".

Israel got stuck in the wilderness because they kept reflecting on Egypt. Every time God said, 'Go to Canaan,' they said, 'Oh, but back there in Egypt we enjoyed...' Some of us can't enjoy the Christian life because we're thinking about how much fun the world used to be. Like Israel, we're thinking about the garlic and leeks in Egypt while we are stuck out here in the wilderness with manna. If you think like that you'll go in circles! Back there may look enticing, but God is not back there; He's in your future. So read these words carefully: '...if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them' (Hebrews 11:15-16 NKJV). When you walk with God, there's no going back!

Chuck Swindoll tells about a man who bought fried chicken dinners for himself and his date. Inadvertently, the attendant gave him the proceeds from the day's business; a bucket of money instead of fried chicken.

Swindoll writes, “ After driving to their picnic site they discovered a whole lot more than chicken - over $800! But he was unusual. He quickly put the money back in the bag. They got back into the car and drove all the way back. By then, the manager was frantic. "Mr Clean" got out, walked in, and became an instant hero. "I want you to know I came by to get a couple of chicken dinners and wound up with all this money here," he said. Well, the manager was thrilled to death. He said, "I'm gonna have your picture put in the local paper. You're one of the most honest men I've ever heard of." To which the man quickly responded, "'Oh, no... don't do that!" Then he leaned closer and whispered, "You see, the woman I'm with... she's, uh, somebody else's wife." ”

Paul wrote, “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist...” (Ephesians 6:14). He was referring to a leather girdle Roman soldiers wore around their waist to protect their loins and carry weapons such as daggers and swords. This girdle also held the soldier's tunic together so it wouldn't get snagged and hold him back. When it comes to your spiritual armour, integrity protects you and holds everything together. If you don't have integrity in big things and small things, you're going to lose the battle. Without integrity, everything falls apart.

George Jones started out as a clerk in a grocery store and quickly gained a reputation for his work ethic. The thing people noticed about George was his character. He exemplified the principle, 'Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight' (Proverbs 12:22 NKJV). George's character brought him to the attention of Henry J Raymond, the renowned journalist. They became friends and together they started The New York Times. Years later when the newspaper waged a crusade against 'Boss Tweed,' Jones received an under-the-table offer of £500,000; a vast sum of money at the time.
All he had to do was retire to Europe. 'You can live like a prince the rest of your days,'
said the gangster making the offer. 'Yes,' replied Jones, 'and know myself every day to be
a rascal.'

The poet wrote, 'I have to live with myself and so, I want to be fit for myself to know. I want to be able as days go by, always to look myself in the eye. I don't want to stand in the setting sun and hate myself for the things I've done. I don't want to keep on a closet shelf, a lot of secrets about myself; and fool myself as I come and go, into thinking nobody else will know - the kind of man I really am.' Nothing is more important than your character. No matter how rich or successful you become, when you lose your character you've lost everything. EFQ Leadership Summit

This Leadership Summit is where leaders come to be transformed. It is where they can leave knowing that they are equipped to transform their communities to make their church a better place for their community.

Local congregations today have taken a back seat and let the world pass them by while they look from within the four walls of the church buildings. Attendance has dwindled by at least 2% per year over the last decade because people do not find their purpose in attending weekly talks.

It is time that Christians find their identity in God. By doing so, they will find their purpose. By creating an Externally Focused Church it allows for people to grow. By allowing people to grow, communities will be developed and the true church of Christ will be born. Gasing Hill once more

PETALING JAYA, JAN 31 — After last night's heavy downpour, the hill was wet. Yet the nine adventurous climbers proceeded to reach the peak, after congregating at the playground located near the foot of Gasing Hill.

Training for Mount Kota Kinabalu Adventure

PETALING JAYA, JAN 25 — We will start with some introduction trails for warm up so that we can tackle the more challenging mountains later. Below is the tentative plan. Any changes will be communicated ASAP.

24^th January - Gasing Hill ( easy trail - 1.5 hours to complete the track )

31^st January - Gasing Hill, again.

7^th February - Lolo ( 3 hours to complete the track )

28^th February - Camp Pancak ( 6 hours to complete the track )

We've climbed Bukit Gasing

PETALING JAYA, JAN 24 — It was a cool Sunday morning, when some men from the Men's Fraternity gathered at 7:30, to conquer their first mount; the Gasing Hill. A handful of women from RRDLT came along to join the mini-adventure.
We had a good time of discovering our limits as we braved steep parts of the hill, crossed a shaky bridge, and persevered towards the peak.
Next Sunday, 31^st January, we will climb this small hill again. We hope you can join us at 7:30 a.m. Regardless of your affiliation, race or language, we welcome you. “ We need to yearn for God and to know Him. We know Him through His Word. John 17:3 says, "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."

Here are some misconceptions or false excuses I hear for why Christians don't read their Bibles:

1. I'm too busy and don't have time. Boy, isn't that a lame one! Listen, all of us are "too busy", but are we too busy to put God first? Priorities, folks, priorities!

2. I'm too tired to read. Yeah, but yet we're not too tired to do other things, like watch TV until midnight. Another lame one! Find a good time during the day when you're not tired (such as in the morning or during lunch break) to spend 20 minutes in the Word.

3. That's for preachers and missionaries. Another cop-out. Listen, God's Word is for ALL GOD'S CHILDREN! God intended for each of us to learn to discipline ourselves a little each day so we can truly KNOW HIM!

4. I do devotionals every day. That's enough! Sorry, but no it isn't. A few verses a day is not enough to sustain or grow in our Walk with God. Why? Because God is so vast, and His ways are much higher than our ways (Is. 55:9). We need to dig into the Book and take a big bite out of it, not a puny nibble! If you're used to puny nibbles as your daily spiritual diet, then at least start by reading a chapter or two.

5. I like to read some parts of it, but other parts I don't relate to. Again, in being respectful of God's Word, we need to look at it as the Whole Counsel of God. So then, why do we practice "Burger King Theology" and pick and choose what we will read? We need to discipline ourselves to read ALL OF IT, even the parts we have difficulty with. That's how we learn.

There are many benefits to daily study of God's Word, which are vital to Bible-believing Christians if we are to enjoy a satisfying relationship with God and a quality Christian life. ... ”

Absent Father Wound

Robert Lewis shared these in "Session 4, Unpacking" :

"I see five common wounds in most men today. Let’s go into our symbolic suitcase, and here’s the first one;
The “Absent Father Wound.” Now when I say “absent father” I mean either a dad who wasn’t there altogether,
or a dad who was there but he wasn’t there.
In the 60’s, I used to hear this wound played out on the radio with a song that went like this.

My son turned 10 just the other day.
He said, ‘thanks for the ball, Dad.

C’mon, let’s play. Can you teach me to throw?’

I said, "not today; I’ve got a lot to do."

And he said, ‘well, that’s okay.’

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon;

Little Boy Blue and the man in the moon;

‘when you comin’ home, Dad? Make it soon.

"I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then, son.

You know we’ll have a good time then. ..."

Now that was the 60’s.
Now, we’re in the 21st Century and the shrill of sons who have this wound has grown harsher, and shriller.
I listen to a band, called ‘Ever Clear’, write their song about fathers and sons and this generation.
I want you to listen to these words:

Father of mine, tell me, where have you been?

Father of mine, take me back to the day when I was still your golden boy

Back before you went away. I remember blue skies, walking the block,

I loved when you held me high. I loved to hear you talk.

You would take me to the movie; you would take me to the beach

You would take me to a place inside that is now so hard to reach.

You had the world inside your hand, but you did not seem to know.

Father of mine, tell me, what do you see

When you look back at your wasted life and you don’t see me?

And when he walked away, he left a huge wound in my life. A lot of young men have never, ever finished this business with dad. It’s so easy, in the midst of that wound, to either get angry and close the lid on my feelings or pretend this is going to go away. But I want you to know, guys, it doesn’t go away until you deal with it in an appropriate way. Then you can put it to rest so you can go on to live an authentic manhood life. That’s what I mean when I talk about this Father Wound. It is so important in men. ..."
